I Don’t Like SPAM!!

More than half of Brits think that the European data regulations have not given them more control over how many junk mails they get, with 20% of those asked saying they thought spam levels had gone up!

A survey by research charity Nesta found 60% of the UK Internet users thought they had no more control over how many marketing emails they were receiving now compared to before GDPR came in to effect in May 2018. It was the youngest user group, those 16-24 who felt they had lost control of their inboxes more than any other group. The 55 and above group felt they had seen no change...

Of the 2,000 people asked about their inbox demographic, 22% reported an increase in the percentage and number of spam over the last 6 months. Only 7% reported they were not receiving any spam emails...

The numbers of spam emails as reported by CISCO TALOS for October 2018 make for grim reading.

  • 340 Billion emails send daily
  • 50.08 Billion were legitimate emails (Less than 15%)
  • 289.99 Billion spam emails per day!

The Cost of Email Spam

Spam costs businesses a whopping £20.5 billion every year.

Detailed research by the Radicati Research Group Inc. suggests that the cost of spam is no small change. Due to lost productivity and technical expenses, email spam cost businesses £20.5 billion annually in 2012 – which was even more than spam gangs earned from sending it.

That equates to around £1,500 per employee annually!!

Whilst marketing spam can be annoying, what is far more serious is the growing number of phishing emails, those targeting business and individuals with the aim of obtaining money or sensitive data.

Despite growing awareness that spam is a serious, costly issue for businesses, 76% of companies reported falling victim to phishing scams back in 2016. As Symantec reports, these rates are only increasing with time – so it’s crucial that businesses be vigilant in protecting themselves against malware, spam, and known phishing lures.

According to Symantec’s 2017 email spam statistics, fake invoices are the most popular tactic for phishing scams. Just over one out of every four malware spam campaigns in 2016 used fake invoices to trick victim’s into clicking – which suggests businesses are particularly vulnerable targets.

The next most common tactics are disguising malware as attached document (13%) and scans (12%).

Mail delivery failure messages account for another 10% of phishing scams, while the final percentage breaks down like so:

  • Order – 9%
  • Payment – 7%
  • Fax – 6%
  • Bill – 6%
  • Emailing – 6%
  • Doc – 5%

Maybe were not all doooomed just yet...

Although it all makes for a depressing read, there is light at the end of the tunnel.  There are some simple steps we can take to protecting our time and spare our inbox from the deluge of spam.

4 Top Tips for keeping safe from Spam and Phishing

  • Use an alias and forward set up when you are registering with a website

This is a fairly easy to do with CloudTree shared email and with Office 365. It's a quick way to keep your actual email private. Each time you register with a website, set up an email forwarder to your main email.

example: if your email is my.name@mydomain.com set up a forwarder as website1@mydomain.com and forward it to your main email. Then if you start to receive email from this forwarder simply delete the forwarder and reserve your main email address for your actual emails with actual people.

  • Never click on a link in an email

If an email has a link in it, don't click on the link, instead actually open your browser and type in the website address. This way you ensure you do not visit spoof sites set up to get your log in details which are then used on the actual website.

  • Ask yourself, "Am I expecting an invoice or scanned document from this person?"

We all live in a fast paced work environment and at the rate emails are streaming into us its so easy to become complacent about file attachments, but stop and ask yourself. Am I expecting this document from this person? Is it from a known email address? If you are unsure simply do not open it, or at the very least scan it with a good Anti Virus protection such as Symantec Cloud Protection before clicking on that file...
